Dr. Maggie Smith is a graduate of Creighton University and Marquette University School of Dentistry. When asked what was the driving force behind her decision to become a dentist, Dr. Smith said, “… I enjoy the opportunity dentistry gives me to think critically, even analytically, about a patient’s care, what their needs or wants are, and of course, the results. I enjoy meeting and talking to people, which makes what I even more fun, and, every day, different. Dentistry is a challenge I really enjoy.”
Hear what our patients are saying about Dr Smith:
“I was highly impressed by Dr Smith, who not only was kind and gentle during my exam, but also personable and knowledgeable. She made sure to answer all my questions to my satisfaction. I feel comfortable and happy having Dr Smith as my regular dentist!”
“Dr. Smith did a fine job!”
“Dr Smith replaced a filling yesterday and removed the cavity underneath. The cavity was deeper than expected, but I thought Dr Smith did a terrific job.”

Last week our very own Dr Maggie Smith and her assistant Julie, hygienist Judy, and a few others of our wonderful staff volunteered their time at Mission of Mercy 2012, which was held at the Alliant Energy Center!
Not sure what Mission of Mercy is? Read on!
Originating in Virginia and spreading throughout the United States, the WDA Foundation and WDA Mission of Mercy dental program has provided $2.9 million in free dental services and treatment through more than 5,700 patient visits since 2000.
A successful MOM event focuses on:
~Providing free, critical dental care with a high priority on treating patients in pain and with infections.
~Raising public awareness of the barriers to dental care faced by low-income adults and children.
~Challenging patients, policymakers and dental professionals to work together to make viable and bipartisan “Healthy Choices” that will improve Wisconsin residents’ oral health.
The Wisconsin MOM program provides care to the uninsured, the under-insured and anyone who otherwise has difficulty getting to a dentist.
Dr. Mark Gustavson earned his B.A. in Chemistry at Gustavus Adolphus College in Saint Peter, Minnesota. He continued his education at the University of Minnesota School of Dentistry and was the recipient of the J. Raymond Gill Award for Excellence in Clinical Prosthodontics. After dental school he completed a general practice residency at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The residency focused on full mouth reconstructions in fixed and removable prosthodontics. Dr. Gustavson has moved to Madison with his wife, Katie and children, Tyra and Cullen.
Hear what our patients have to say about Dr Gustavson:
“Dr. Gus[tavson was] terrific. I don’t think I’ve ever had a positive experience with a dentists office before my appointment at Associated. ”
“I’m a huge wimp and Dr. Gustavson and his assistant, Jean, were absolutely wonderful! Very caring, gentle and listened to and answered my concerns.”
“Dr. Gustavson and Jean make such a wonderful team. I have been a patient for the last 5 years I have been in Madison. I always appreciate how welcome and comfortable they make me feel. They make me laugh too, and I always leave the office smiling.”
“Mark Gustavson — positive, genuinely concerned, straight-forward and encouraging.”

Dental implants are stronger and more durable than their restorative counterparts such as bridges, partials and dentures. And from an esthetic standpoint, they look and feel more natural, some of which is due to the progress made in their biocompatible development. Implants offer the patient a permanent solution to tooth and continued bone loss. Additionally, implants may be used in conjunction with other restorative procedures for maximum effectiveness in that a single implant may serve to support a dental crown replacing a single missing tooth. Implants can also be used to support a dental bridge for the replacement of multiple missing teeth, and can be used with complete dentures, both standard and mini implants to increase stability and preserve bone structure.
Procedural advancements, including the development of the above mentioned “mini” implants, mean that a larger population than ever before are finding themselves candidates for dental implants.

I read this article by Jim Du Molin and thought it might be interesting to readers and my patients.
We (I’m assuming Jim Du Molin) conducted a survey that asked dentists what questions dental patients ask when considering getting implants. It turns out that there’s a real difference between the questions dental implant patients do ask — and which questions they should be asking.
Dentists responded with the following . . .
The top 5 questions dental patients ask –
1. How much do dental implants cost?
2. How long do dental implants last?
3. Are implants painful?
4. How long will it take to get my new teeth?
5. Does dental insurance cover implant surgery?
Versus . . .
The top 5 questions dentists want patients to ask –
1. Am I a good candidate for implants?
2. What are the…

Ever wonder how Affiliated Dentists came to be? Well, read on for a brief history!
Dr Busby graduated from dental school in 1978 along with Dr Wipperfurth and Dr Wierwill. Those two started their own practices in Madison, but Dr Busby ended up going into the military until 1983. Once out, Dr Busby started a new practice with Dr Wipperfurth. Later on he started the office known as Midvale Regent Dental Associates with Dr McGary, and later, in 1997, all offices merged into one, forming what you now know as Affiliated Dentists.
They only had one office, the one off of River Place by Monona. However, Affiliated Dentists was growing fast, and in 2003 the West office on Odana Road was built. That same year Dr Miller graduated dental school and joined the team.
The practice continued to grow, and new dentists joined over the years. Dr Gustavson joined in 2007, Dr Wierwill in 2008, Dr Peles in 2009 and, most recently, Dr Smith in 2012. For more details on each dentist, visit our website at http://www.affiliateddentists.com.
